The main goal of the Master in Textual and Cultural Studies in English is to provide the students with the theoretical, methodological, rhetorical, linguistic and critical tools necessary to carry out an in-depth, academic and up-to-date analysis of the culture of English-speaking countries through their diverse representations, especially in literature and cinema. In the current context of globalisation, in which the English language and the culture of English-speaking countries has such a widespread impact on our lives, it is essential to train university students to know the cultural codes which differentiate these countries from our own and to be able to confront all types of cultural representations with a critical spirit and with the academic baggage which is essential for the development of this spirit.

Through this Master’s training, the student will dig deeper into the knowledge of both the English language and the culture, literature and cinema created in this language and will be able to count on having the perfect tools needed to enter the academic community. It will contribute to the training of professionals with a high level of specialisation in the field of English Studies. This Master’s, therefore, will be useful for English-language professionals and for those working in the analysis of contemporary culture, as well as for people who work for multinational companies who not only need to communicate in fluent English, but also need to understand the cultural codes of the people and the institutions they work in and negotiate with. The Master’s courses is, therefore, suitable for teachers in secondary schools, language schools and universities, as well as for professionals working in the field of film dubbing and subtitling and for cultural mediators in general, for literature and film critics, people who work for publishers and communications companies, and for journalists and business people. As the course is taught entirely in English, our programme has already attracted foreign students from Argelia, Bulgaria, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Great Britain, Morocco, Rumania and Ukraine, as well as Spanish students from other Spanish and foreign universities, all of them university graduates with a good understanding of the English language, and an interest in the culture, history and artistic representations of the countries which use English as their first language, especially Great Britain and the United States.

The ACADEMIC PROGRAMME is designed around a common core of compulsory subjects and three areas of subsequent specialisation through optional subjects: English and American literature; Anglo-American culture and cinema, and analysis of metadiscourse in the transmission of humanistic and scientific knowledge.

Each subject carries a total of 7.5 ECTS credits.

The MA Dissertation carried out individually by each student, is worth a total of 15 credits.

The teaching is structured around THREE MODULES, each one consisting of compulsory subjects and a number of optional subjects. The students should take the compulsory subjects of each module and, from then on, will be free to design their own itinerary by choosing combinations of courses that they deem opportune from the optional subjects available within each one of the modules.
